Dad 1 (Dad telling a story from his days in the R.A.F.)

2012 - 2013

This recording was made in either late 2012 or early 2013, when Frank was still able to both remember details and to speak reasonably coherently: it is preceded by a brief reminiscence of a sundial in the garden of one of the customers he used to visit on his rounds, describing the Latin inscription carved around the gnomon. The story concerns one rather obnoxious Warrant Officer, who, having previously been in the R.A.F., had 're-mustered' i.e. rejoined the service but at a lower rank. The Initial Training Unit (I.T.U.) was based in St. John's Wood, London, not far from both Lord's cricket ground (used for training - mostly drill - purposes) and Regent's Park, complete with canal. Unwisely, according to the story as heard from one Corporal North, this W.O. threw his weight about a bit too much among his colleagues, and was rewarded, one dark night sometime in 1942, by being deposited in this same canal. He insisted on an immediate identity parade to find the culprits, which failed in its purpose, chiefly because the two military policemen who accompanied him on the occasion happened to be the two responsible for the deed! Dad enjoyed telling and re-telling the story, and I enjoyed hearing it every time.
